Arma 2 is decent and probably because of its age has allot more user content.
Some teams still prefer Arma 2. Arma 3 looks better in all regards but Arma 2
graphic wise is similar to COD4. Arma 3 character movement is better.
Both suffer from a very clunky interface.
Like allot of games the people you are playing with make all the difference.
Being on a friendly organized team would be a very good experience in my opinion.

Do you have any aussies playing with you in Arma 2? Is the ping issue like COD4?

I mostly play the old Ghost Recon game online and it is just like COD4, the farther from the server the worst the ping.
I usually ping about 280-300 on our server that is in Denmark. Oddly I played on a server in England a couple of times and the ping was quite a bit better. We had one Aussie who played but he moved on several years ago. His connection always gave him fits.
